Baileys or the official WhatsApp API: what you are actually buying

Key takeaways

  • Behind any WhatsApp chatbot there is one of two technologies: a WhatsApp Web-style connection (such as Baileys) or Meta's official API.
  • The WhatsApp Web-style connection uses the number you already have, starts in minutes with a QR code and has no per-message cost, but it is not an official product and is not suitable for bulk sending.
  • The official API is the route for campaigns and large-scale notifications: it requires business verification, and Meta charges for each template message.
  • IANALITICS uses the WhatsApp Web-style connection, says so openly and does not offer bulk sending.

When someone offers you a WhatsApp chatbot, one of two technologies sits underneath. The difference between them changes the price, the timeline, what you can do and what can happen to you if you use it badly. Almost nobody explains it in the proposal, so here it is, without the marketing.

The two options, in one table

WhatsApp Web-style connection (Baileys) Meta's official API
How it works Links to the business WhatsApp as one more computer A business account approved by Meta
Cost per message None Meta charges per template message
Setup Minutes, by scanning a QR code Days or weeks, with business verification
Number The one the business already uses A number dedicated to the API
Bulk sending Not advisable Yes, with approved templates
Backed by Meta Not an official product Yes
Risk Meta may restrict the number if it detects abuse Low, if the policies are followed

What needs to be said plainly

Baileys is not the official WhatsApp API. It is the same kind of connection as WhatsApp Web: the system links to your account as if it were one more computer, by scanning a QR code from your phone. No more, no less.

That is why there is no cost per message: Meta does not sit in the middle of the conversation and therefore does not bill it. And for the same reason, it is not suitable for bulk campaigns. Sending unsolicited messages at volume is exactly what gets a number restricted, and at that point no provider can help you.

If someone offers you mass broadcasting over this kind of connection, they are putting your business number at risk.

Who each option is for

One simple question settles the decision: does your business receive enquiries or send campaigns?

If you receive — people write asking about prices, availability, opening hours, whether you still have such and such — the WhatsApp Web-style connection is faster to set up, cheaper to run, and keeps the number your customers already know. That is the case for the vast majority of small businesses: real estate agencies, clinics, shops, workshops, restaurants.

If you need to send campaigns to contact lists, mass reminders or transactional notifications at scale, you have to go with the official API, pay for each template message and go through business verification. There is no shortcut, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you a problem.

What we use at IANALITICS, and why we say so

We work with the WhatsApp Web-style connection, and we say so up front rather than selling it as though it were official. Our product is built for businesses that receive enquiries and want to answer them well, around the clock, without hiring someone for the night shift.

That means, with the same honesty, that we do not offer bulk sending or broadcast campaigns. It is not a limitation we bury in the fine print: it is written on the pricing page, in the list of what the service does not include.

Two practical recommendations

If you go this route, two things will save you almost every headache:

With that sorted, the agent lives on our servers and keeps answering even if you shut down the office computer.

If you want to see how it replies, message us on WhatsApp and talk to our own agent. And if you would rather see the numbers first, they are on the pricing page.
